The Pre-Conference Workshop is designed to provide clinicians with an evidential background on environmental factors affecting human health. The workshop consists of two sessions: The Paddock to the Plate and The Person and offers unique clinical case studies and an in-depth Q & A session. You will discover the impact of agricultural chemicals and mycotoxins on the human body and which of our genes are responsible for breaking down and combating our day-to-day exposures.

We are thrilled to once again host this popular addition to the program which is designed to be an insightful precursor to the 2020 Main Conference. Additional costs apply to attend the Pre-Conference Workshop.

Speaker: Warren Maginn, Functional Nutritional Medicine Practitioner and Educator

This session will address the role of moulds and yeasts, the impact of agricultural chemicals, mycotoxins and other biological chemical burdens.

Warren will review clinical lab testing options from chemical toxins, to mycotoxins, to immune sensitivities, and endogenous microbiome. He will discuss clinical treatment priorities and strategies, from appropriate food origin, processing, prep and storage choices – to relevant work/home environmental considerations – and clinical investigation / prescription guidelines for at-risk patients.

The Person
 
Speaker: Dr Denise Furness (PhD), Molecular Geneticist and Nutritionist, Founder Your Genes & Nutrition.This session will focus on the The Person and why some people may be more sensitive to particular chemicals and toxins.Dr Furness will explore how specific genes involved in the breakdown and elimination of chemicals and toxins, as well as genes that code for powerful antioxidants, are required to combat our day-to-day exposures. She will provide an overview of the detoxification process and the antioxidant system and explain how our inherited genes may make us more susceptible to the negative health effects of various environmental chemicals and toxins.

Speaker: Dr Denise Furness, PhD, pioneer in nutrigenomics and epigeneticsWe are all exposed to environmental toxins and it is not possible to avoid them all. Some people will tolerate these environmental toxins, whilst others will be more sensitive and will become unwell. Sensitivity to environmental pollutants depends on a number of factors, including the level of exposure, the person’s genetic make-up, their nutrient levels and overall health.Dr Furness will explore how specific genes involved in the breakdown and elimination of chemicals and toxins, as well as genes that code for powerful anti-oxidants, are required to combat our day to day exposures. She will provide an overview of the detoxification process and the anti-oxidant system and explain how our inherited genes may make us more susceptible to the negative health effects of various environmental chemicals and toxins.

Environmental Medicine in the 21st Century – Rising to the Challenges

Speaker: Prof David O Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment, University of Albany, New York

Clinician education in environmental medicine is becoming increasingly important in the 21st century as the global chronic disease burden worsens and emerging evidence indicates that the role of environmental exposures in human disease is much greater than commonly understood. The world we live in has changed drastically over the recent decades and changes are accelerating. Thousands of anthropogenic chemicals, as well as artificial electromagnetic fields/radiation, are being added to the environment as by-products of industrial processes. Contamination of our air, food and water with environmental toxicants is a global problem affecting us and other species.

Each of us has many man-made chemicals in our bodies. From the time of conception we’re exposed to substances that interfere with normal organ development. These environmental insults affect the development of the nervous system and alter immune system function.

How much of the burden of human disease is a result of environmental exposures? While there is still no clear answer to this question it is certain that environmental exposures are more significant than currently appreciated.  Incorporation of new knowledge to guide and shape clinical practice is vital. What are the reasons and what are the implications in public health and how can physicians use this knowledge to both reduce hazardous exposures and prevent as well as treat disease?

What does the future hold in the era of climate change?

Speaker: Dr Karen Kiang, Paediatrician and member of Doctors for the Environment

The life of every person today will be affected by climate change. Health impacts include the injuries and mental health sequelae of extreme weather events; increasing cardiovascular disease and asthma from rising heat and polluted air and water; more food insecurity and vector-borne illness; and worsening mass migration and national security issues. However, there are solutions to mitigate the worst of these effects, and health professionals play an important role in ensuring that these solutions are carried out.

Epigenetic mechanisms of hormonal and endocrine disruption

Speaker: Professor Leigh Ackland, Director – Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Deakin University

The body is vulnerable to assaults from environmental chemicals used in agriculture, industry and personal products. These chemicals termed endocrine disruptors (EDs) interfere with hormone synthesis, action or metabolism. They can be present in plastics, insecticides, food and toys and produced by processes including smelting, chlorine bleaching of paper pulp and from waste incinerators including hospital waste. EDs are linked with increases in endocrine disorders, cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and degenerative brain disorders.

Strong evidence is accumulating that the key mechanism of action of EDs is through their epigenetic effects on cells that result in the altered activity of genes. Elucidating the mechanisms of endocrine disruption is essential to understanding how EDs cause disease. Prof Ackland will explain the three main molecular processes by which EDs exert their effects to cause disease. These include modification of gene activity and histones by methylation and acetylation and the effects of non-coding RNA. She will share detailed examples of the effects of EDs and offer personal strategies to minimise exposure.

Water toxicity and management

There are many things about the physics, chemistry and biology of water that are not fully understood, yet we do know is water is the basic infrastructure for life and can quickly spread pathogens and provide a growth media for mould. We also know drinking and bathing water commonly contains:

Gene Testing – ‘future proofing’ for the next generation

The genes we inherit from our parents influences our health, our ability to absorb and utilize nutrients and our sensitivity to chemicals and toxins. Genetic profiling of key genes involved in particular metabolic pathways and detoxification systems can help identify individuals who may be at increased risk for chemical sensitivity and/or particular health disorders. In addition to helping people understand their inherited susceptibilities, genetic profiling can help tailor nutrient intake and lifestyle advice to optimize gene expression and compensate for particular genetic susceptibilities. Having knowledge and awareness of inherited susceptibilities allows for informed choices that can improve our health and also that of future generations.

This presentation will focus on how to incorporate genetic testing into clinical practice and the development of prevention and treatment strategies for those concerned with chemical sensitivities and related health disorders.

Metal toxicology – clinical presentation, diagnostics and management
Speaker: Dr Damian Wojcik, Clinical Director of Northland Environmental Health Clinic, Integrative GP and Forensic PhysicianIt is impossible to understand the causes of our modern disease epidemics, let alone effectively treat them, without knowledge of the toxic metals, and their role in both personal and ecological pollution. Dietary and nutritional support alone will not cure these patients with chronic metal toxicity. We need a profound paradigm shift in modern medicine.This lecture will give an overview of the importance of chronic metal toxicity as an underlying and treatable cause for much illness seen in general practice. The two most commonly seen toxic metals are lead and mercury, and for the latter, dental amalgams still represents the most significant personal source of contamination. Dr Wojcik will explore how to recognise, test, and treat these patients, including a brief introduction to Irminix (NBMI) one of the few newly available metal chelators that can cross the blood-brain barrier and irreversibly bind lead and mercury before faecal excretion.

Case Study Presentation – Interactive Workshop Session

Presenters: Dr Denise Furness and Natalia Hodgins

In 2016 Natalia Hodgins’ health plummeted following a viral infection.  A series of health issues followed and over a period of 18 months her weight plummeted from 60kg to 38kg, leaving her fighting for her life. Doctors and specialists were unable to pinpoint the cause until she sought help from an integrative doctor who began investigating environmental factors.

In this session, delegates will have the opportunity to work interactively through this case study whilst Dr Denise Furness and her patient Natalia Hodgins take you through her complex journey and gradual recovery.
